#MW1008 – Ban Chalong School - SPONSORED
The school sees the importance of agriculture which is the foundation of Thailand. The school wants
agricultural activities to enhance life skills learning for students while they are in school. The school’s agricultural garden was set up in 2014. The idea came from a group of compassionate students who shared the food that they brought for lunch. They wrapped the dishes with rice and ate among the friends.
They started by clearing the area behind the school for the planting of banana trees and cultivation of fairy mushrooms.
Banana is a fast-growing plant and the harvest is distributed among the students. As for the mushrooms, the produce will be cooked as food for the underprivileged student. This has created interest among the students in the agricultural garden.
Through the school gardening activities, the students learnt about
1) making use of their free time in a meaningful way contributing to a bigger cause
2) working together as a team to achieve a common goal
3) instil the value of agricultural farming; and
4) living life according to the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy elaborated by the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej
The goal of the school is to turn the agriculture activities into a Sufficiency Economy Learning Center for the students and the community, a place where young farmer can get the necessary agriculture educational support, production material and to learn and practice what they have learnt. It is a centre where the Young Farmer can deliver in the various activity imparting the knowledge to a bigger audience.
